Montecristo cigars are among the most recognized Cuban-made cigar brands in the world. The logo of this brand is represented by yellow and red crossed swords and the name originated from the famous novel by Dumas «The Count of Monte Cristo». The history of the name origins is quite interesting by itself - it is said that the book by Dumas was among the favorite ones of the tobacco rollers working in the factory at that time. The company that owned the factory at that time - Menéndez, García y Cía - was the first one to introduce the practice of an employee reading different books to the workers to make the process less boring for them and improve the quality of the product. Following the Revolution in Cuba the operation of the company moved to the Dominican Republic and since then there have been two companies producing Montecristo cigars - Habanos SA (based in Cuba) and Altadis SA (based in the Dominican Republic). As most brands of the kind Montecristo cigars are sometimes manufactured in different shapes and colors in limited editions. This is often done to honor some significant occasion - like a festival, anniversary or some important charity event.
